The best new TV shows coming your way in 2024

 When it comes to new TV shows, we're spoilt for choice in 2024. From brand-new shows to long-awaited next seasons and intriguing spin-offs, we've got it all coming our way over the next few months on Netflix, Disney Plus, Prime Video, and more.

New seasons of Doctor Who, The Boys, and House of the Dragon are arriving in the next couple of months, as well as new shows like post-apocalyptic video game adaptation Fallout and historical satire The Sympathizer from Oldboy director Park Chan-wook. If that wasn't enough, the final season of The Umbrella Academy and new Star Wars series The Acolyte are excitingly close, too. We've got details on all that and more in our guide to the biggest new TV shows on the way, this year and beyond. 

Ripley

Andrew Scott takes on the role of unscrupulous conman Tom Ripley in this new Netflix show, serving a fresh take on the tale made famous by the 1999 movie The Talented Mr. Ripley, starring Matt Damon in the titular role. Based on the Tom Ripley novels by Patricia Highsmith, Johnny Flynn and Dakota Fanning also star as Dickie Greenleaf and his girlfriend Marge Sherwood, while Steven Zaillian, whose previous screenwriting credits include Gangs of New York and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, is writing and directing.

Fallout

Based on the video game franchise of the same name, Fallout is a retrofuturistic apocalyptic drama set in an alternate version of Los Angeles where people live in underground bunkers to stay safe from radiation, mutants, and bandits. The Fallout TV show cast includes Yellowjackets' Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, and Kyle MacLachlan, and Westworld showrunners Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan are at the helm. 

The Sympathizer

Park Chan-wook may be best known for directing movies like Oldboy and Stoker, but he's also behind the critically acclaimed TV show Little Drummer Girl, starring Florence Pugh. He's turned to the small screen again with The Sympathizer, a dark historical comedy about a North Vietnam plant in the South Vietnam army, played by Hoa Xuande, who's forced to flee to the US at the end of the Vietnam War. Robert Downey Jr. also stars in the series – playing multiple antagonistic roles.

Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off series Knuckles sees Idris Elba reprise his voice role as the hot-headed titular echidna, while Adam Pally is back as deputy sheriff Wade Whipple – who Knuckles has set out to train in the ways of the Echidna warrior. Expect guest appearances from Ben Schwartz's Sonic and Colleen O'Shaughnessey's Tails, as well as turns from Cary Elwes, Julian Barratt and Ellie Taylor.

Doctor Who season 1: May 11, 2024

Following the Doctor Who Christmas Special, Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson will be returning for their first proper season in May. Now, you might be confused why season 14 is suddenly being called season 1, but showrunner Russell T Davies describes it as a fresh start for all things Who. We don't know too much about what enemies the pair will be tackling in the new season, but Davies and the cast have shared a few clues.

Bridgerton is based on Julia Quinn's book series consisting of eight novels that follow each of the eight siblings as they find love. Season 1 and 2 have, appropriately, covered books one and two, which tell Daphne and Anthony's stories. Though it Bridgerton's third season is actually based on the third book in the series, which focuses on Penelope and Colin. Netflix is splitting the scandal across two parts this time around too.

The Boys season 4 release date: June 13, 2024

2024 will see The Boys make its bloody return to screens with season 4. The hit superhero show will pick up in the aftermath of Gen V as we reunite with Billy Butcher, Homelander, and the rest of the gang. The new trailer promises some big, and gross revelations, as new characters join the cast. That's not all either, with plenty of those involved promising some seriously shocking scenes on the way too.

Star Wars is going way, way back with The Acolyte. The new series is set at the end of the High Republic era, which is about 100 years before The Phantom Menace, and will follow a former Padawan (The Hunger Games' Amandla Stenberg) who reunites with her Jedi Master (Squid Game's Lee Jung-jae) to investigate a string of sinister crimes. Russian Doll co-creator Leslye Headland is on board as showrunner and the cast also includes Carrie-Anne Moss, Manny Jacinto, and Dafne Keen. 

House of the Dragon season 2

House of the Dragon season 2 release date: June 2024

House of the Dragon season 2 will be roaring onto our screens this summer as we pick up with fantasy epic once again. The Game of Thrones prequel has plenty or gore and politics in store too as the Greens and Blacks go to war. What's more, if the trailer is anything to go by, there will be some truly chilling moments yet to come as well. We don't have an exact release date yet, but early summer is when we're heading back to Westeros. 

The Umbrella Academy season 4

The Umbrella Academy season 4 release date: August 8, 2024

The fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy sees the Hargreeves siblings return for one last round of time-hopping, world-saving shenanigans. Not much is known about season 4 just yet, with Netflix keeping everything tightly under wraps, but we do know that the main gang (including Elliot Page's Viktor, Tom Hopper's Luther, and Aidan Gallagher's Five) will all return. There are some new faces joining the cast, too, including Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, and David Cross.

Arcane season 2

Arcane finally returns to Netflix this year with its second season. The show will pick up with League of Legends champions, and sisters, Vi and Jinx as they head in very different directions. The first trailer for the new season promised plenty of drama ahead, as well as some gorgeous animation when the animated show returns.

The Penguin

The Batman spin-off series The Penguin will air later this year, and will focus on Colin Farrell's brutal antagonist. Set in Gotham's underbelly, the show will track Penguin's plan to take over in the mob power vacuum after the death of Carmine Falcone. This one arrives ahead of The Batman 2 in 2025 so should be enough to tide us over until Robert Pattinson's caped crusader returns.

Agatha

Agatha release date: Late 2024
Available on: Disney Plus

After multiple name changes (Agatha: House of Harkness, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, and Agatha: Darkhold Diaries are no more) and a delay from winter 2023, the MCU series is now set for release in early fall 2024. Kathryn Hahn reprises her role as the titular witch first seen in WandaVision, and she's joined by new cast members Aubrey Plaza, Joe Locke, and Patti LuPone. 

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew release date: Late 2024
Available on: Disney Plus

Skeleton Crew, starring Jude Law, takes place in the same part of the Star Wars timeline as The Mandalorian, and Dave Filoni said at Star Wars Celebration that the shows will all intertwine in "weird ways." Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts is also involved with the show, which is reportedly in pre-production.

Creature Commandos release date: Late 2024

Creature Commandos kicks off James Gunn and Peter Safran's new reign at DC. The animated show follows a black ops team of monsters brought together by Amanda Waller. Gunn is writing all seven episodes, and it's got a stellar cast including David Harbour, Indira Varma, and Alan Tudyk.

Squid Game season 2 release date: 2024

Korean hit Squid Game is officially returning to Netflix in 2024. The next installment will reunite us with winner Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) – and he's on a quest for revenge. Plot details are otherwise quite thin on the ground, but we do know that we can expect some new games and characters in the new season.

Dune: Prophecy

Dune: Prophecy release date: Late 2024

After the success of Dune: Part Two, a new prequel series is on its way to the small screen this year. The show will explore the origins of the all-powerful Bene Gesserit, 10,000 years before the events of Dune, following Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula (Olivia Williams) Harkonnen as they establish the sisterhood in an attempt to combat forces that threaten the future of humankind. Dune director Denis Villeneuve is on board as an executive producer.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 release date: 2024

The next season of The Rings of Power is due to arrive on Prime Video this year. We don't know much about season 2 just yet, but season 1 gave us plenty of plot threads to pick back up on, from the creation of Mordor to the identity of the mysterious Stranger.

Daredevil: Born Again

Daredevil: Born Again release date: 2025

Charlie Cox's Daredevil is getting another series, having returned in Spider-Man: No Way Home and going on to appear in She-Hulk and Echo, though this will be his first-ever starring role as part of the MCU. Plot details are scarce, though we do know that Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin returns and that the series will be 18 episodes long. 

However, we'd say this one may still be a way off as even though filming began in March 2023, it's hit some big delays. Marvel has removed the current creative team and is in the process of replacing them. 

Ironheart

Ironheart release date: TBC

Not much is known yet about Ironheart, featuring Dominique Thorne's Riri Williams following in the footsteps of her idol, Tony Stark. The character first appeared in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
