The video game release date schedule is starting to take shape, with Microsoft Gaming dating one of its biggest upcoming Xbox Series X games for early spring, and Sony pushing a smattering of fantastic third-party upcoming PS5 games that are exclusive to the platform over the first quarter. Admittedly, it is looking a little light on the upcoming Switch games roster, but that's to be expected when rumors of the Nintendo Switch 2 continue to swirl.
Given that the best games of 2023 act as a showcase for one of the greatest years for gaming in decades, we're still curious to see whether this year has what it takes to match the previous. But with so much promise and potential in the new games for 2024 that we know about already – including some incredible new PC games, and the last handful of upcoming PS4 games and upcoming Xbox One games – we're convinced that it's going to be a year to remember.

The Outlast Trials

The Outlast Trials is emerging out of Early Access on March 5 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X in a terrifying prequel to some of the best horror games in recent memory. Set in the Cold War, you (and three friends, if you're up for some online co-op) will be fighting to survive strange and perverse trials instituted by the Murkoff Corporation. With full character creation, horrifying stealth combat, and no end of weird puzzles to circumvent, The Outlast Trials is set to be one of the most interesting upcoming horror games of 2024.
Alone in the Dark
Platform(s): PC, PS5, Xbox Series X | Release date: March 20, 2024
Alone in the Dark is best known for helping to popularize the survival horror framework that helped define the early Resident Evil and Silent Hill games, and now developer Pieces Interactive is looking to return the series to its former glory. Alone in the Dark is a reimagining of the 1992 classic, a psychological horror dripping with Southern Gothic charm. You'll take control of two protagonists (voiced by Jodie Comer and David Harbour) as you attempt to unravel the mysteries of the Derceto Manor across two realities. It looks sublime, and should be on the radar for any horror fan.
Dragon's Dogma 2
Platform(s): PC, PS5, Xbox Series X | Release date: March 22, 2024
It's been over a decade since Capcom delivered the original Dragon's Dogma, a sprawling RPG that quickly earned itself a cult-classic status in the minds of many. With this sequel, the developer is looking to deliver a definitive single-player, narrative-driven role-play experience – packed with challenging action-RPG combat and exquisitely designed enemies that dominate the horizon. Everything we have seen of Dragon's Dogma 2 so far has impressed us, particularly its immersive fantasy world and attention to detail in combat mechanics. Expect this one to break big when it lands on March 22 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
Rise of the Ronin
Platform(s): PS5 | Release date: March 22, 2024
Rise of the Ronin is one of the remaining few upcoming PS5 games to actually have a release date locked in. This open-world RPG comes courtesy of Team Ninja, the studio best known for delivering relentlessly challenging combat through the Ninja Gaiden, Nioh, and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty series'. Rise of the Ronin is promising something different though, taking that difficulty and weaving it through a lush world inspired by 19th-century Japan. If you've been longing to play a new samurai game after completing Ghost of Tsushima, then this is the experience that you've been waiting for.
Princess Peach: Showtime!
Platform(s): Nintendo Switch | Release date: March 22, 2024
As speculation begins to arise around the Nintendo Switch 2, many players are wondering what to expect from Nintendo in 2024. Well, the answer is Princess Peach: Showtime – a delightful action-adventure game full of color and character. This Nintendo Switch exclusive will have you take on the role of Peach, the first game to feature her as a central protagonist since 2005, where you'll be donning outrageous outfits to help save the Sparkle Theater from Wicked Grape and the Sour Bunch. It's a lot of fun, and undoubtedly one of the most anticipated upcoming Switch games of the year.
